FRESHWATER CRAYFISH FARM FOR SALE-BUSINESS & LAND FREEHOLD
KEY FINANCIAL DATA
40% growth with a gross farm turnover of $200,000 for 2010/11. The operating model has been developed and is now well beyond the implementation phase. Anticipating a growth rate again for 2011/12 of 35-40%. Have quickly become the major fresh water crayfish producer in NSW.
MARKETS
Bait Market
Supply 3 sizes of bait crays. Small 22-25mm, Medium 25-40mm and Large Medium 40-55mm.The small size market is being targeted at the salt water angler. The demand has been especially pleasing in this area and we are about the only farm able to supply this size.
Our penetration into the Victorian market has been excellent with customers now in the Lakes Entrance and Melbourne regions buying regularly. This has been achieved with little or no advertising.
Medium and large medium bait has been growing nicely and with the river systems and dams now with plenty of water we anticipate a bumper coming year. Many of our crays for this size go to the Wagga and Canberra regions.
Now that we have the production operating model up and running a core focus for 2011/12 will be marketing to the bait and tackle shops. Especially Sydney and Melbourne where we have been getting a new shop outlet each two weeks as they hear about the quality and regular supply of our product.
A local presence in the Melbourne area to service Victoria, especially regional Victoria would be excellent – ship large quantities down and distribute from there. Could be setup easily and with our knowledge developed on the “holding of product” would create additional opportunities.
We do NO shop front sales, it is all wholesale.
Feeder Market
50mm-60mm size yabbies. Currently supplying around half a ton a year now.
Table Market
This has been part of the production cycle of recent times only. Whatever we can produce we can sell. I anticipate a significant growth in this area next year as we have especially setup a growth cycle for this product.
Additional Opportunity
Use of the waste water from the acclimation system is currently returned back into the main water system. The opportunity is to develop a large scale use of the by-product – Aquaponics. The land size is there to do it.
Competitive Advantage
Approval for this sort of project now is not impossible to get, but requires a huge amount of patience!! The location allows for 365 day production due to the warmer temperatures .
Other Income
Cattle grazing to keep the bush down and rental income.
STAFFING
This operation would lend itself ideally to a “Family Owner Operated Business”. Especially if they lived and worked on site. Employ a full time manager who has a full understanding of the operation, plus casuals for harvesting.
